Participants
of Thai Sky Festival '08 will enter Thailand
through it's capital of Bangkok - the city that
sets
the pulse
for
southeast
Asia. The real name of Bangkok in Thai is "“Krungthepmahanakorn
Amornrattanakosin Mahintrayuthaya Mahadilokpob Noparat
Rajataniburirom Udomrajanivej Mahasatharn Amornpimarn Awatarnsatis
Sakatadtiya Wisanukamprasit” but, fortunately, it
is abbreviated for daily use to Krung Thep, which
means "City of Angels."
Bangkok
has something for everyone - Royal Palaces, magnificent temples,
street vendors, excellent shopping for every budget, exotic
night life, and world-renowned cuisine. Bangkok has
tackled the problem of public transportation with a multitude
of creative ways to get from point A to point B: in addition
to standard taxis and busses, Bangkok has motorcycle taxis,
river taxis, open-air tuk-tuks, and the overhead Sky Train
(BTS) system.
Bangkok's
new Suvarnabhumi (pronounced
Su-wan-na-pboom)
International Airport, is located 35 km east of the city. Many
airlines provide international service to Bangkok from major
cities
around the
world. Since
February and March fall within Thailand's high tourist season,
please book your flight soon for the best
prices. |

met at the airport and transported to the Windsor
Suites Hotel. Every
room at the Windsor is . . . a suite! with separate
bedroom, sitting room, and en-suite bath. For dining
and entertainment, the Windsor has four restaurants each offering
a different
cuisine. And don't miss the beer garden outdoors, which
specializes in seafood dishes and is a great place to catch
up with old friends. |

| Prachuap |
The
beautiful Prachuap peninsula stretches into the Gulf of Thailand,
creating two lovely bays: the town nestles up to Prachuap Bay,
the Wing 5 Air Base to Manao Bay — and in the middle lies
the Thai Sky Festival Drop Zone. The shores have expansive beaches,
with vegetation laden islands dotting the sea. The most prominent
landmark in the village is Khao Chong Krajok (Mirror Mountain),
and panoramic views reward those who climb the 395 steps to the
Buddhist temple on its peak. The monkeys met along the
way are either playful or annoying, depending upon your point
of view! |

The
tranquil fishing village of Prachuap, actually the capital city
of the Prachuap Khirikhan province, is as yet undiscovered by
hoards of tourists and developers. The people of this area are
noted for their friendliness, and we'll be greeted at the Hadthong
Hotel by its warm and welcoming staff. The peaceful
surroundings, the gentle surf breaking along the beaches, the
twinkling lights of the fishing boats at night, and the spectacular
sunrises in the morning will soon cast their spell! |

Those
who feel the need to stay in touch with the hectic outside
world, however, needn't fear. The Hadthong management
installs an internet cafe on the premises just for Thai Sky
Festival participants; it comes complete with computers and
DSL lines for rent at very reasonable rates. And, for
those who wish to bring their own computers, the entire
hotel should be set up for wireless
internet service by the time
we arrive!

| Hua
Hin |
On Sunday,
March 16, we will travel
100 km north of Prachaup to Hua Hin, the summer
residence of Their Majesties, the King and Queen of Thailand. While
Phuket and Samui were discovered fairly recently, Hua Hin
has been
the favorite Royal resort town since the
1920's, when a railway line was built between Bangkok and
Hua Hin We will stay at the lovely, romantic Sofitel
and the party-party Hilton Hotel, which is right next door. Both
hotels are beautiful, and are rated the best in Hua Hin!

|
The
Bay rooms at the Hilton
Hotel Hua Hin combine elegance with contemporary Thai
design, each offering a view of the sea.
|
|
Hua
Hin boasts lovely white-sand beaches perfect for water sports
or relaxation, and we'll have plenty of time for both, because
we stay in Hua Hin for two days! When the sun sets, Hua
Hin becomes a hub of bustling activity, with it's popular night
market and excellent restaurants. Hua Hin and Prachuap
are both known for their very fresh and delicious
seafood! |
